there is a family in our neighborhood who have a few kids. their names are: kaya 2, cootie, mama-do, and baby asthma. mama-do is the only boy, and no, they aren't nicknames. i shit you not.
I am totally cracking up. I live in Santa Cruz and we get names like Ocean, Summer, Autumn, Sage....all the hippy names. So, I'm with you. What is up? Baby asthma, that's just too much.
So, so many posts to reply about. It looks like you bought a house? If so, love the picture and totally cool for you! What a feat!
You wrote about Saida's personality. I have to say, maybe it's an Ethiopian girl thing. Amara is fierce, strong, independent and sooooo busy. She's very happy most of the time, can't complain, but the girl is on fire. Her new thing is slapping mommy's face when I take her away from something and she's frustrated. She's now asserting her will which is great but exhausting. So, enjoy it now. When they add that to walking and touching, it's a whole other ball of wax. At least I know she'll be a strong woman. That's awesome.
Anyway, I was thinking about you, Ben and the girls. So much has happened since that day at Toukoul. Taake care and stay in touch.
Yeah, is that really how you spell that? Asthma? :) lol.... I have no idea about Kaya 2, but Mamadou is a pretty common west African boy's name. I had at least 2 Mamadous at my high school. I think it's a variant of Mohammed, but I could be wrong on that.
Cootie? That's awesome. Man, I hope that kid's big enough to not get picked on in the schoolyard...
we live in brooklyn and are proud parents of two little pancakes from ethiopia, one cubscout, and are expecting a very quiet cricket to join our family in the fall. we like pizza and snow days. we do not like pushy people on the subway or ironing.

Is mama-do actually mama-do or mahamadou?
There must be some misunderstanding. There is no way they named a child Baby Asthma. Right? I mean, aren't there laws for this?

you would think, but i asked him to spell his name and he said very clearly it was mama-do. maybe his parents wanted to throw off USCIS?
